Lettre Internationale
Revolt-meets-considered-thinking

Problem
Lettre Internationale is the leading cultural and political publication in Europe, with independent offices in Copenhagen, Budapest, Berlin, Madrid, Bucharest, Moscow and Rome. The Danish Lettre International decided to change from being a quarterly publication to a yearly journal. This editorial decision prompted a thorough redesign. The former oversize format was popular, but hard to read and impractical to handle.

Solution
Pleks designed both the publication and the overall identity for the new Lettre Internationale. We chose a smaller and very readable format. Our aim with the publication was to evoke a feeling of “revolt-meets-considered-thinking”.

Result
The visual strategy was well received and continues to develop. For the first issue we introduced woodcut letters as illustrations. And for the latest issue, After the Fall (of the Berlin wall), we introduced type designer Peter Verheul’s first published typeface “New Berlin” issued in 1989.
